Tomato Aamti (Curry)

Servings: 3-4

  • 3 tomato
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • 1/2 tsp kashmiri mirch powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1//4 cup grated coconut
  • Roasted ground nuts, a handful
  • 5-6 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp Black Grams (urad dal)
  • 1 tsp rice
  • Sugar or Jaggery
  • turmeric powder
  • Asafoetida (hing powder)
  • Curry leaves (kadhilimb)
  • Mustard seeds (mohari)
  • salt to taste
  • oil
  1. Wash all the tomatoes and cut them in big vertical slices. 
  2.  Heat a pan, add 2-3 tsp oil and fry black grams and rice until brown.
  3. Blend together freshly grated coconut, chopped onion, green chillies, garlic cloves, roasted black gram and rice. Make thin mixture by adding little water at a time.
  4. Add ground nuts to the mixture.
  5. Heat a pan, add oil. Temper it with mustard and curry leaves, turmeric powder and cumin seeds.
  6. Add tomato and mix well. Let the tomato cook well.
  7. Add kashmiri mirch powder, red chilli powder and mix well. Let the masala cook well.
  8. Add the blended coconut paste, mix well and saute for 2 minutes.
  9. Add water and bring to a boil on medium flame.
  10. Add pinchful sugar and salt and cook till done.
  11. Serve with hot plain rice.
